Eastern Cape promotes access to the automotive aftermarket sector through its Franchise Indaba taking place in East London

The Automotive Industry Development Centre Eastern Cape (AIDC-EC) is hosting, in partnership with FASA, a two-day indaba to drive transformation and inclusion in the region’s lucrative automotive aftermarket sector.

The Franchise and Aftermarket Indaba at the Abbotsford Centre in East London on October 3 and 4 is aimed at providing entrepreneurs and BBBEE entities with resources to access franchise opportunities, funding, policy support and mentorship to enter the automotive aftermarket. Barriers to entry to the automotive aftermarket have been drastically lowered by the Competition Commission’s new guidelines for the automotive aftermarket sector which includes the “Right to Repair’’ which gives the consumer freedom of choice around which supplier will maintain and repair and service a vehicle.

AIDC-EC CEO Thabo Shenxane says the automotive aftermarket sector is a channel for inclusion, transformation and job creation that will help industry and government reach South African Automotive Masterplan Targets – aimed at achieving these key objectives. One of the models used for empowerment is the Franchise Model.

“The new guidelines for the automotive aftermarket provide unprecedented access to new players. At the same time consumers will still require quality replacement parts as well as diagnostic tools and test equipment – which can often be most easily accessed by new entrants through franchising. All the options and resources available to new entrants will be discussed at the Indaba’’, Shenxane said.

The AIDC-EC, an implementing agent of the Eastern Cape Provincial Government’s economic development strategy, is hosting a series of strategic events, says Shenxane, building up to South African Automotive Week event to be held in Kyalami from October 24-30.

The Franchise and Aftermarket Indaba is the third of four strategic events. Earlier events in September included the BBBEE and Transformation Roundtable and the Engineering Skills Indaba. The fourth and final event is an automotive component manufacturing Suppliers Day aimed at driving competitiveness in the Eastern Cape’s automotive supply chain.

Among the brands that will be represented at the Franchise and Aftermarket Indaba in East London on October 3 and 4 are CARtime Service & Repair and HJ Bosch & Sons Panel Beaters. The franchise divisions of both Absa and Nedbank will also be attending.

Other speakers include franchise experts and consultants Anita Du Toit, Franchise Development Consultant at Franchise Fundi and Frans van der Colff, Executive Fellow at Henley Business School.
