Started by three Californian college friends who came to Cape Town and noticed a lack of healthy food and then proceeded to open the first Kauai. Today Kauai operates under the multi-brand food group, Real Foods Group (Pty) Ltd, with the mission to make healthy eating easy and accessible. The focus is on real food, which is food that’s made with honest ingredients and free from unnecessary additives.

Kauai has been leading the healthy food movement in South Africa since the brand opened its first store in Cape Town in 1996, where the brand started. The brand has grown to more than 160 Kauai stores in South Africa and now internationally with stores in Europe and South East Asia, and has become a well-established brand amongst South African consumers over 26 years.

Kauai`s mission remains the same: We make healthy eating easy and accessible.

The Real Foods Group (Pty) Ltd acquired Kauai in 2015, and with their unmatched expertise in healthy, natural food as well as innovation, social responsibility, and sustainability, they successfully repositioned the brand into the fast-growing fast-casual segment, with a renewed focus on quality, taste, and nutrition. Real Foods Group (Pty) Ltd plans to continue introducing new and exciting menus, partnerships, and developments to continue the Kauai growth trajectory.

Kauai won the prestigious 2018 FASA Franchisor Of The Year and 2017/18 Brand Builder Of The Year awards, as well as the 2018 Best Field Service Consultant in the industry, which is a testament to our leadership in the fast-casual dining and health space. The Kauai brand is also about our people and finding the right franchisees and personnel in our stores is fundamental to our success and as such, the brand focuses a lot of effort on people’s growth and best in industry HR practices. To this end, Kauai won the Africa Employee Engagement Company of the year in 2019 and the Internal Communications / Employer brand of the year in 2018.

Finding the right people will make or break any company. An enormous emphasis on personal development of the people at Real Foods starts with the recruitment, training, field support, reviewing and rewarding. All together we have a management team of 12 individuals including our CEO, Dean Kowarski.

Our management team has a vast amount of experience and expertise in running their departments with careers in Woolworths, SAB, Nando’s, Mr. Price, Dairy Queen, SERCO, and Tiger Brands. Dean is an ardent businessman who strives to live a healthy lifestyle and is passionate about health issues and good food. He has vast experience across many business disciplines. In addition to his numerous business interests, he is the founder of Nü Health Food Café, and in March 2015 he was appointed Kauai CEO.

We continually look for ways to improve the business model by squeezing cost centres without effecting the customer experience and we do this using our 90 plus company owned stores to test and challenge new ideas. The franchisee will therefore benefit not only from fellow franchisee benchmarks but also from the company owned stores as guidelines to compare to their own actual performance.

As people have been faced with the reality of COVID, they have then also questioned their lifestyles and eating habits and whether they should improve them, as a consequence we have recently seen the largest growth in new customers in our history. This should lead to any existing or new franchisee benefitting from above average industry sales growth, so the timing to buy a Kauai franchise has never been better.

Intensive training is provided with experienced and dedicated trainers. 8 Weeks of training is mandatory for all franchisees as it orientates the new franchisees on all aspects of the business. The training and support team is dedicated to setting up and supporting all franchisees for success.

Minimum cash: From 50% of set up costs.
Details of on-going fees and/or royalties: Royalty fee: 6%. Marketing fee: 4% (1.5% for In Motion when in a gym).
