Started by three Californian college friends who came to Cape Town and found a lack of healthy food, they opened the first store. Today Kauai operates under the multi-brand food group, Real Foods (Pty) Ltd, with the mission to make healthy eating easy and accessible. The focus is on real foods, which are foods that are free of harmful, synthetic chemicals.
Kauai has been leading the healthy food movement in South Africa since the brand opened its first store in Cape Town in 1996, where the brand started. The brand has grown to more than 160 Kauai stores in South Africa and now internationally with stores in Europe and South East Asia, and has become a well-established brand amongst South Africa consumers over 23 years.
