OBC Better Butchery is niche wholesale and retail business which offers consumers convenient access to frozen chicken, fish, red meat, processed meats and essential grocery items at affordable prices, catering for South Africa’s lower LSM markets and  offering our franchisees tremendous growth opportunities.

It’s our pleasure to introduce you to OBC Better Butchery. We’re one of South Africa’s fastest growing retail brands, with a mission to support the low to mid-market sector by providing quality, affordability and convenience.

The first ever OBC Chicken store started trading in 1987 in Oberholzer, Gauteng. Initially, chicken was the only product for sale, the addition of meat and grocery items happened much later.

Over the past three decades since the first OBC store opened its doors for business, we have grown to over 90 stores nationwide and 6 liquor stores within the Gauteng region, with an annual growth estimate of approximately 20% compared to the previous year.

This has created a solid foundation for even further growth – with an even bigger national footprint being the ultimate goal.

Boasting an average annual in-store foot traffic count of nearly 36 million customers, one can see why OBC stores are more than sufficient to thrive financially amid local competition.

There is a constant high demand for our stores, where we receive positive feedback from the moment, we announce that a store is coming to a new area. Our set of strong family values coupled with a well-engineered business model and a powerful brand have extended through to everything we do from the day we started and this hasn’t changed.

Paired with successful national marketing campaigns annually, OBC Group has exceeded its predetermined benchmarks, pushing in-store sales and gaining popularity amongst a younger market.

We have also taken technology and sustainability to new levels, at our distribution center, with our solar project which comprises of 1500 panels. The CO2 emissions saved annually amounts to 465,27 tons which is equivalent to 21,370 trees.

“We continue to strengthen our world-class supply chain to ensure South Africans have access to the products they need in a way that’s fast, efficient and minimizes our impact on the environment,” says the group’s MD — Tony Da Fonseca.

Today, we offer newcomers the opportunity to become part of our fast-growing and highly profitable network. The coming years will present new opportunities for the group. Fueled by evolving customer expectations the group plans on opening 21 new OBC stores in 2025. It has taken hard work and dedication, but today we’ve succeeded in establishing a national foothold across all provinces. Expansion into neighbouring countries may also be on the cards.

As a franchisor, we have made a significant investment in infrastructure and franchisee support and our efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. We are a proud member of FASA since 2009. OBC’s Operations team has overseen the successful establishment of over 90 stores, with another 21 stores planned to open for 2025– mastering the art of taking willing entrepreneurs to thriving OBC franchisees via the shortest route possible.

Decades on the front line of the retail game have taught us the best practices in countless retail touch-points. From optimised store layouts that lead customers to the products they’re looking for, to accounting and management issues. We give entrepreneurs the tools to ensure their success.

Every new franchisee receives everything they need to get set-up and running from the word go. From shop fitting and merchandising, to computer system installation and on-site training for all staff and managers. OBC provides the support that will give new store-owners the best chance of success regardless of their experience in the retail environment.

As an established retail group, we offer franchisees the advantage of a large well-resourced support structure. This depth of resource that means stores can enjoy unlimited growth.

As our stores grow, we grow with them and help them retain the values that make the brand what it is, no matter how big they get.

To make the grade as a successful OBC franchisee, you don’t just need access to capital and an excellent track record. These are essential prerequisites, in addition you need to possess the attributes that characterise a successful business owner.
