FASA congratulates Monkeynastix on being a member for 30 years

FASA congratulates and salutes Monkeynastix, the fun and challenging fitness movement education program for children 1 to 12 years on their thirtieth anniversary as a member of the Association. As pioneers of movement education in South Africa and internationally, Monkeynastix is a broad-based, holistic programme that combines creativity and music with basic training in flexibility, balance, strength, agility, co-ordination and body awareness.

Embracing joyful learning

According to CEO Dirk Cilliers, experts agree that movement education is just as important as reading, writing and arithmetic. “Movement education comes from developing a wide variety of fundamental movement skills such as hopping, skipping, throwing, catching and jumping are essential to every child’s development. Integrating physical activity in children’s lives is essential for creating a foundation of movement and activity that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.”

Dirk Cilliers, the CEO of Monkeynastix, has dedicated the past few years of developing innovative strategies to address childhood anxiety. Recognising the critical role of physical exercise in mitigating stress and anxiety, he believes that children need engaging activities that combine physical movement with imaginative play. This philosophy is rooted in Dirk’s foundational research on movement in childhood development, which he began nearly 28 years ago in Amsterdam.

Originating from Dirk’s passion for sports and movement, Monkeynastix began as a fundamental program for preschoolers to participate in activities that build strong body and minds, enhancing self-esteem. Over the years, Dirk’s journey has impacted thousands of children worldwide through their franchise system. His ongoing innovation includes creating age-appropriate curriculums, utilizing unique toys made from recycled materials, and introducing exciting new routines.

Today, Monkenastix offers three main programs:

  • Babynastix for babies aged 3 to 24 months;
  • Monkeynastix for children aged 12 months to 8 years;
  • Supernastix for youngsters aged 7 to 12 years.

Each program is tailored to the distinct needs that have emerged over time, catering to different generations from Baby Boomers to Millennials.

The evolution of Monkeynastix in a changing world

Dirk Cilliers reflects on the events of the past few years and the impact it has on the well-being and development of children. “As we entered a new decade, parents of newborns and preschoolers were filled with optimism, driven by a thriving economy and bright prospects for their children’s futures. However, unforeseen global challenges significantly altered the landscape for young learners. The emotional and social impacts of these times on young children became a focal point for many, including those involved in early childhood education.”

Monkeynastix, with its deep connections to schools, educators, parents and children, observed firsthand the effects of these global changes on children from three months to twelve years. This observation led to a pivotal transformation in our approach to movement education, especially in regions like South Africa with significant changes in daily life.
