Glenn Pratt, founder, Chairman and Managing Director of The Drain Surgeon
Franchising, is a qualified plumber by trade. After working as a tradesman for a short
period, he started a plumbing business in 1979.
Glenn Pratt commenced franchising of The Drain Surgeon during 1991, but not before
he had operated a further pilot operation, namely The Drain Surgeon Sandton, for more
than one year. Wishing to concentrate fully on the franchising side of the business,
Glenn Pratt sold the Pretoria plumbing operation, Plan Two Plumbing (Pty.) Ltd, trading
as The Drain Surgeon Pretoria, to his wife Debbie, who was in any case active in the
business from its inception. Based on similar considerations, the Sandton branch was
subsequently sold as a franchise.
Since then Glenn has built up Plan Two Plumbing Services (Pty) Ltd to become a
multimillion rand enterprise with close to 120 employees. Currently the Pretoria,
Johannesburg and Cape Town areas are serviced by Plan Two Plumbing Services (Pty)
Glenn Pratt has no criminal record.
The Drain Surgeon was established by Glenn Pratt in 1979, initially as a Pretoria-based
plumbing repair company. In the ensuing period, a combination of great service attitude
and aggressive marketing have seen to it that The Drain Surgeon has established itself
as a household name across South Africa.
With The Drain Surgeon franchise opportunity available since 1989, the system has
reached a level of maturity which necessitated a revamp of the franchise model.
Consequently a lot of research was done, trends analysed and a new investor friendly
franchise model introduced.
The franchise model allows for an investor to choose his or her level of involvement in
the day-to-day running of the business. Group marketing, centralised call centre and
system driven dispatching to the plumbers allows for a relatively low level of
involvement in the daily running of the maintenance plumbing franchise. In certain
cases, the investor may be the actual working plumber which would of course change
the level of involvement.
