9 – 11 May 2013 – Sandton Convention Centre

Despite the economic recession still holding its grip on business growth, franchise companies in South Africa seem to be following the international trend of being far more resilient than other business sectors and showing good signs of growth and recovery.  This is seen in the uptake on stands for FASA’s International Franchise & Entrepreneurial Expo (IFE) which takes place at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg from the 9th to the 11th May 2013.  According to Vera Valasis, Executive Director of FASA, this is a strong indication that the franchise sector is heading for a full recovery.

Consistent with its entrepreneurial character, franchising simply won’t be held back.  What we are seeing are established franchise brands forging ahead with expansion plans and a whole lot of new business opportunities breaking onto the market.  By the same token, people, tired of the recession and affected by downsizing, forced early retirement or the lack of jobs in the formal sector, are keen to take control of their own futures and start their own businesses.”

The International Franchise & Entrepreneurial Expo (IFE), owned and managed by the Franchise Association of South Africa (FASA), is the ideal platform to showcase business opportunities and encourage small business development which continues to be the backbone of the economy. Resilience and tenacity in the franchise sector was clearly seen at the IFE expo in 2012 and looks to continue this year with both exhibitors and visitors agreeing that business confidence had indeed ‘turned the corner’ with small business ready to lead the recovery and franchising offering the best business opportunities.  Visitors come from all over Africa and from abroad to see our burgeoning industry which contributes almost 12% to GDP (according to Bendeta Gordon’s Franchise Factor 2010).

The 2013 International Franchise & Entrepreneurs Expo, with stand bookings that have so far exceeded all expectations, promises to be another success for franchising and for the Franchise Association of South Africa.  According to Derek Smith, FASA’s Chairman, franchising, which is now governed by the Consumer Protection Act in terms of disclosure and what is required of a business system to call itself a franchise, is poised to play a significant role in growing the economy through training and job creation. “Government, through initiatives such as the Jobs Fund and the BBSDP Fund supported by the development banks, has recognised the franchising industry as the one area where creating new sustainable jobs can be achieved quickly and effectively.  This new approach will without question change the face of franchising and give a much-needed boost to small business development” says Smith.

As one of the longest running franchise and business opportunity expos and now in its 18th year, IFE has built its reputation on ‘quality rather than quantity.’  A Speakers Corner will have a line-up of speakers, including specialists, franchisors and franchisees to educate the public on all aspects of business and franchising. A highlight of the 2013 IFE expo will be the chance for visitors to win a number of prizes, including two dynamic franchises:

BOOST JUICE BAR are giving away a brand new, fully constructed and workable Boost Juice Bar franchise as well as R10 000 worth of initial marketing for the Boost Juice Bar outlet. NEDBANK as the funding partner will arrange working capital for the winner account and credit card facilities etc.

SANDWICH BARON’s franchise that can be won is an outlet fitted with the essential fixtures, fittings and furniture that meet the Sandwich Baron minimum shop specifications, as well as food stock to the value of R25 000 and one month’s training. ABSA is the funding partner providing working capital for the winner, account and credit card facilities etc.
