SELF SERVICE CHECKOUTS NOT A SUCCESS

According to a report by Kevin Meltzer on www.bizcommunity.com the trend in self-service solutions, thought to be the answer to efficiency and cutting costs has backfired as US retailers such as Wal-Mart and Albertsons are among the other high profile chain stores that are either reducing or completely doing away with self-service checkouts.  They cite slow and error prone systems as the reason as well as concerns about customer satisfaction and the lack of customer interaction.  It seems that consumers still want the personal touch and retailers are finding that the self-service model alienates their customers who don’t necessarily feel that self-service is a convenience but rather that the companies are trying to save money and don’t put much store into customer service.  Another concern was the efficiency of the self-service system that, in many instances, was not as speedy or convenience as it was meant to be.  Whilst the self-service concept of on-line banking and shopping is gathering momentum, it seems that when a customer does step into a store, they still want to interact and have that personal touch.
