SA RETAILERS FARING BETTER THAN OVERSEAS COUNTERPARTS

Compared to retailers in the UK  - whose retail insolvencies soared by 25% in the final three months of the 2011 (UK) and in the US where well-known shopping centres like Sears plan to close between 100 and 120 of its Sears and Kmart stores - South Africa showed solid retail sales growth and consumer spending.  According to Stats SA liquidations in the retail sector for 2011 were down by nearly 16% from 2010 and the University of South Africa’s Bureau of Market Research (BMR) predicts that retailers will maintain positive trading in 2012 and forecasts a growth of 4.5% for formal retail sales growth, driven by positive GDP, employment and labour compensation growth and a stable interest rate.
