PICK N PAY OPENS IN MAURITIUS

As part of its African expansion strategy, Pick n Pay opened its first store in Bagatelle’s Mall in Mauritius.  This will be followed by two more stores in the next year.  Pick n Pay’s Africa expansion strategy is largely through the franchise route  partnering with locals although in countries like Zambia company-owned stores are also part of the mix.  The company has retail operations in Namibia, Botswana and Lesotho and last year they purchased a further 24% of Zimbabwean operation TM Supermarkets, increasing its shareholding to 49%.  Pick ‘n Pay also opened its second store in Zambia in March and its first in Mozambique in June.  In addition to contributing to employment in those countries, the group’s intention is to ensure that local farmers and suppliers are supported as much as possible in order to stimulate further economic growth.
