LIFESTYLE TRENDS IN SOUTH AFRICA

The South African Advertising Research Foundation (SAAF at www.saarf.co.za) has released its findings on its AMPS Dec 10 (Jan-Dec 2010) on the lifestyle and activities of typical South Africans across the gender line.  Some of their findings, which could help businesses define their consumers, include:

  • 47.5% of men read a newspaper sold in his area once a week.
  • 50.5% of women cook for pleasure once a week.
  • 28.2% of women and 25.3% of men read books weekly.
  • 47.1% of women and 32.5% of men attend a religious gathering on a weekly basis.
  • only 20.4% of men go to the doctor, dentist or other medical professional each month, compared to 30.5% of women.

Asked what their top 10 monthly pleasure are, men and women differed in the following:

  • Whilst 33.8% of men eat out at a restaurant or steakhouse on a monthly basis, the figure for women is higher at 35.7%.  28.8% of men and 25.4% of women consider having a braai each month.
  • Whilst only 26.6% of men shop for pleasure on a monthly basis the figure for women is higher at 31.9%.
  • 43.5% of women will visit a hair salon against only 20.0% of men on a monthly basis.
