COMPETITION COMMISSION CLEARS SUPERMARKET SECTOR OF COLLUSION

Just before the end of 2010, the Competition Commission, without any media fanfare, cleared South Africa’s supermarket sector of collusion.  This follows 18 months of investigation into the sector on alleged transgressions which were driving up the price of food.  While clearing retailers of colluding over prices, the Competition Commissioner confirmed that the investigating body had not finalised its report and outstanding issues such as the demands the big supermarkets make when signing long-term leases with property owners to ensure exclusivity and favourable rates needs to still be addressed.
