GOOD NEWS POINTS TO 2011 ECONOMIC RECOVERY

Some of the good news coming through that indicates the economy is in recovery mode and we can look forward to a more profitable 2011

  • A bumper festive season sets the tone for 2011
Following the trend in both Europe and the USA where, despite the severe weather, retailers reported record sales, South African retailers and especially the hospitality industry had one of their busiest festive seasons in years.
  • Return to normal spending patterns
The last quarter of 2010 Economic Confidence Index (ECI) released by TNS Research Surveys showed a return to a more normal, non-recessionary pattern as well as a strong improvement on how people are feeling about their current economic circumstances – reading levels not seen since early 2008 and well up on the same time last year.
  • Belt-tightening pays off
According to a report by Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu (DTTL), the efforts of many companies to cut costs have paid off with net profit across the 250 retailers in the world increasing from 2.4% tin 2008 to 3.1% in 2009.  It seems that the great recession forced companies to manage their bottom line and introduce cost savings.
  • SA’s credit spending increases
According to the National Credit Regulator (NCR), in their Consumer Credit Market Report, there was a 40, 23% increase in consumer credit granted compared to September 2009. This rapid growth in unsecured lending has seen a year-on-year growth of 59.85%.
  • Retail growth of 3.4% forecast for 2011
The Bureau of Market Research (BMR) has looked into their crystal ball and in a report released forecast a 3.4% real growth rate for formal retail sales in 2011.  This will be achieved within an expected economic growth rate of 3.5% in GDP for the economy as a whole.  Non-durable retail sales are anticipated to increase by 3.1% while durable retails sales are expected to increase by 3.4% in 2011.  This is a clear indication that the retail sector is moving further out of its recessionary condition on the back of moderating inflation and a lower and stable interest rate environment.
