SURVEY REVEALS ON-LINE SHOPPING HABITS

With use of the internet growing year-on year (5.3 million users in 2009 and growing at a rate of around 15% per annum) with a prediction by World Wide Worx that there will be almost 11 million South Africans online by 2015, it is interesting to see the on-line shopping habits of those internet users. Mastercard Worldwide, in its 2009  survey on South African online shopping habits revealed that:

  • 77% of South Africans who have access to the Internet are shopping online

and have done so in the past three months.

  • 49% of CD’s & DVD’s were bought online
  • 44% of airline tickets
  • an increase from 30% in 2008 to 43% in 2009 of home appliance & electronics purchases.
  • an increase from 12% in 2008 to 22% in 2009 in ladies’ clothing & accessory purchases.

In general South Africans find purchasing online more convenient, user-friendly and easier than physically going out to buy or ordering over the phone.  83% were satisfied with their overall online shopping experience and 72% intend to continue online shopping.  Credit cards were by far the most common payment method( 52%) followed by debit cards (26%) and electronic transfers (10%).
