SOUTH AFRICA ON ITS WAY TO ECONOMIC RECOVERY

At a FASA breakfast, sponsored by ABSA, economist Dawie Roodt of Efficient & Financial Holdings presented a very positive view of how South Africa and many other emerging markets were recovering from what has officially been dubbed ‘the Great Recession’.  Painting a rather bleak outlook for the United States, Europe (with the exception of the UK) and Japan who may take up to 15 years to recover from the recession, it seems that not only did emerging economies withstand the recession well but will be the ones to see buoyant future growth.  South Africa, as the economic powerhouse of Africa is right behind countries like China, India & Brazil in being economic growth hotspots.  Dawie Roodt turns familiar clichés on their heads and maintains that South Africa’s problem is not ‘unemployment’ but ‘employment creation’, that wealth creation is what counteracts poverty and that we need more competition, not collusion.   Following the successful staging of the Soccer World Cup that has re-ignited the South Africa brand, with a sound fiscal policy, low debt levels and by maintaining an efficiency of state, there is no reason why the economy cannot grow, create jobs and prosper.  Good news for franchising is that demand in the economy is returning and that demand is predominantly in the consumer goods sector – which franchising services.
