FASA HOSTS BRAZILIAN FRANCHISE DELEGATION

FASA and sponsor Standard Bank hosted a delegation of business people from Brazil who were on a fact-finding mission to identify potential franchise opportunities in South Africa.  Under the auspices of the Brazilian Franchise Association, several representatives from Brazilian trade and investment companies were given an overview of our franchise sector with respect to:

  • The South African economy in relation to that of Brazil.  Economist Dawie Roodt of Efficient & Financial Holdings highlighted several parallels between the two economies – with both countries, as emerging economies, poised to enjoy faster economic growth going forward than first world economies which took more of a beating in the great recession.
  • The legislative aspects to doing business in South Africa with FASA’s Legal Advisor Eugene Honey of Bowman Gilfillan covering aspects ranging from Intellectual Property and copyright of brands to the implications of the Consumer Protection Act and the Companies Act.
  • Standard Bank presented their credentials and gave an overview of how the banking sector works with respect to banking practices and assessing and funding new franchise expansion.
  • South Africa’s demographics and spending trends were discussed with Stephen Walters of Fernridge Consulting giving a detailed overview of South Africa’s population density, it’s retail demographics and the challenges that go with establishing a footprint in Africa.
  • Lindy Barbour of Franchize Directions gave statistics on franchising in South Africa and also identified the challenges and opportunities for incoming international brands.
