RETAIL PROPERTY INCHING OUT OF RECESSION

In the property market cycle, retail property is expected to come out of the recession faster than industrial properties and offices.  That’s according to the South African Property Owners Association’s market trends report which shows that although arrears and vacancies are still a problem and smaller shopping centres will take longer to recover, there is definitely an upward movement in the retail and office sectors.  Although South Africa’s economy is gathering momentum, it will depend on the revival in consumer spend, which accounts for about 60% of the economy. But many analysts say the pace of growth in the economy this year will not be enough to restore all the jobs which were cut last year.  This is making the consumer more wary of spending and whilst GDP is bouncing back quicker than consensus expected, it is still in a vulnerable state.
