SOCCER WORLD CUP RE-BRANDS SOUTH AFRICA

Whilst it may take South Africa years to pay off the cost of hosting the FIFA Soccer World Cup with analysts predicting that foreign spending will only inject R13-billion into the economy compared to the R40-billion it cost to host the event, the one area where we have scored big time is in the successful re-branding of our country.  From having a reputation of a poorly run 3rd world country with violent crime we are now seen as the shining star of Africa, having staged a highly successful world cup event.  Marketing pundits say we cannot put a price to the global market exposure and to the value of the goodwill and PR that we will have achieved by the end of the tournament which will have far-reaching economic and tourism benefits.  Businesses in the hospitality and retail sectors have reported booming trade and Visa reports that visitors have spent $128 million on their credit cards, up 54% compared to the same period last year.  A survey by office rental firm Regus of its 15 000 database contacts shows that overall 86,5% of respondents believed hosting the soccer would be good for business, with 83,5% believing that it would improve global opinions about South Africa as a place to do business. Building on our new image is what South Africa’s has to do once the dust has settled over the Soccer World Cup.
