THE IMPACT OF THE ELECTRICITY HIKES

With the National Electricity Regulator Authority of South Africa finally granting Eskom a 24,8% tariff increase for 2010, 25,8% for 2011 and 25,9% for 2012, the impact will be huge on all sections of the economy and have far-reaching implications for businesses.  The chain effect from the manufacturer through to the retailer and the consumer will be acutely felt and a presentation by Schneider Electric at the FASA Convention focused on the impact and how to minimize and curb excessive usage. The company believes there is a significant opportunity for sustainable energy savings with a systematic approach that is largely unaddressed by industry and consumers today.  By simply learning how to interpret your electricity bill, understanding peak, off-peak and standard consumption times and installing intelligent metering, costs savings can be achieved. Concrete actions include looking at areas such as energy management through analysis, reports, remote monitoring and training and analysing usage areas such as refrigeration, compressors, VSD, HVAC and lighting to see where energy savings can be made.

Schneider Electric advises that to effectively manage energy you need to measure in detail, engage with energy specialists, implement projects and verify results.  For more information contact Riaan Pretorius at Schneider Electric on 011 254 6400 or email riaan.pretorius@za.schneider-electric.com
