THE SEE-SAW OF ECONOMIC RECOVERY

Sizwe Nxedlana, Economist from FNB gave a very perceptive and realistic presentation on the impact the global recession is still having on economies around the world.

Whilst first world countries still battle their economic demons, the South African economy, on the other hand, is seeing a somewhat uneven recovery which is gaining momentum although consumer spending remains subdued as does fixed investment.  There are signs of a strong recovery in the supply side sectors, with mining and electricity output improving, a surprising rebound in vehicle sales although the main internal trade recovery has been unsatisfactory with construction still in the doldrums.

Sizwe cautions that the slow recovery to set to continue and although consumer confidence improves, caution persists and inflation is moderating rapidly.  With interest rates the lowest in 30 years, we are seeing on the one hand household wealth rising again – but on the other jobs are still being lost and South African household indebtedness remains near record highs.
