‘KEEP THE DREAM ALIVE’  ADVISES BEN FILMALTER OF MUGG & BEAN FAME
The FNB x2in5 breakfast held at the end of February had as its guest speaker Ben Filmalter, founder of the Mugg & Bean franchise chain who told franchisors to ‘never stop dreaming and striving to achieve that dream!”  This coming from a man who started more restaurants than he cares to remember – many were failures and some, like the famous Mugg & Bean franchise – a huge success.  Acknowledging that the franchise sector and hospitality in particular is fraught with challenges – from labour and energy costs to changing economic dynamics and consumer trends – Ben believes that it takes total commitment, a good dose of common sense and steadfast leadership to make a business work.  With franchising always at the cutting edge of innovation it is imperative for all franchisors to have their ears on the ground for demographic changes, economic shifts and consumer trends and then adapt and improve their product offering in line with those changes, continually raising the bar.  Ben Filmalter recently sold the 100-strong Mugg & Bean franchise group to Famous Brands but has retained the international outlets which include operations in the Middle East.
