JOINING FASA |
|
FASA, as the official body for franchising in South Africa, has, as the underlying basis on which membership is granted and controlled, a Code of Ethics and Business Practices to which all members subscribe.
Membership Criteria
Please take note of the following information which applies to all applications: |
- All applications are forwarded to FASA's membership committee for comments and final approval, where applicable.
- The entire approval process takes between 4 and six weeks from date of submission depending on the number of questions or suggested amendments raised by the membership committee and the applicant's response time.
- The annual membership fees are R13 330.00 (excluding VAT). A once-off legal fee of R2782.00 (excluding VAT) is payable in respect of franchisor membership applications only. Please note if the applicant's franchise agreement was written by a franchise attorney who is a member of FASA, the legal fee is waived. FASA membership is granted in four categories:
- Franchisor Membership
- Preliminary Membership - Developing or new franchise companies
- Supplier/Service Provider Membership
- Franchisee 800 Club
1. FRANCHISOR MEMBERSHIP  |
Full Membership to companies wishing to franchise their businesses. A thorough assessment of each applicant company is made before membership is granted. This would typically include a look at the viability of the concept as well as the presence of appropriate documentation, with the minimum requirements being:-
- Disclosure document that complies with FASA’s stringent specifications
- Fair and reasonable franchise agreement that clearly reflects the spirit of FASA’s Code of Ethics and Business Practices
- Has a comprehensive operations and procedures manual
- The franchised concept must have been in operation successfully for at least one year in South Africa. International franchised concepts that are members of their respective country of origination's franchise association do not automatically qualify as members of the franchise association in SA.
The submission documents must include the following:-
- The membership fees are R13 330.00 (excluding VAT) per annum payable on submission of the membership application documents plus a once-off legal fee of R2782.00 (excluding VAT). The legal fee is waived if the applicant's franchise agreement was written by a franchise attorney member of FASA.

- Completed Membership Application form for Franchisors, duly completed, initialed on every page and signed in full on the last page, by the correct or relevant representative of the applicant's company.
- Franchise Agreement
- Operations Manual
- Disclosure Document. The Disclosure Document must include financial statements of existing franchised outlets so that prospective franchisees can evaluate the financial viability of your concept. A guideline on the required inclusions and format of the Disclosure document is available in the latest Franchise Directory, which can be purchased from the FASA offices.
- Member's Declaration form - this document must be printed on the applicant company's letterhead, duly completed and signed by the correct or relevant representative of the applicant's company.
- A copy of the latest financial statements of the franchise company

2. PRELIMINARY MEMBERSHIP - DEVELOPING OR NEW FRANCHISE COMPANIES  |
Preliminary Membership to companies wishing to franchise their businesses. A thorough assessment of each applicant company is made before membership is granted. The minimum requirements being:-
- has a disclosure document that complies with FASA’s stringent specifications
- has a fair and reasonable franchise agreement that clearly reflects the spirit of FASA’s Code of Ethics and Business Practices
- has a comprehensive operations and procedures manual

- The membership fees are R9 630.00 (excluding VAT) per annum payable on submission of the membership application documents plus a once-off legal fee of R2782.00 (excluding VAT) . The legal fee is waived if the applicant's franchise agreement was written by a franchise attorney member of FASA.

3. SUPPLIER/SERVICE PROVIDER MEMBERSHIP  |
This category is open to professional practices that wish to provide professional services of high ethical standards to the participants in the franchise sector. These include law firms, banks, insurance companies, franchise consultants, brand and marketing companies, IT companies, suppliers and many others. In order to complete your membership application, a service provider application form has to be completed, signed and submitted together with a member's declaration document. Please note this document must be printed on the applicant company's letterhead, duly completed and signed by the correct/relevant representative of the applicant company. |
